The Cleanie Awards Honors The Hershey Company as the 2022 Corporate Sustainability Initiative Winner

On February 22, The Hershey Company was named The Cleanie Awards’ Gold level winner for its Corporate Sustainability Initiative category. The Cleanie Awards is the leading awards program focused on recognizing innovators and those making an impact in driving the clean energy economy.
Edison Energy is proud to have worked with Hershey on several clean energy initiatives, serving as an advisor on Hershey’s energy procurement strategies to support its broader sustainability goals.
In March 2021, The Hershey Company announced new commitments to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by more than 50%, and Scope 3 by 25% by 2030 (as compared to their 2018 baseline). To achieve its GHG emissions targets, Hershey announced new clean energy partnerships to develop solar projects in the U.S. as it moves its operations toward the use of clean and renewable energy.
For the first project, located in Camden, North Carolina, Hershey entered into a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) that will enable the financing and construction of the company’s first utility-scale solar farm. In addition, Hershey signed a solar PPA with National Grid Renewables for 50 MW of the previously announced Noble Project (Noble), currently under construction in Denton County, Texas. In early 2022, Hershey also initiated plans to begin construction of its Copperhead Solar & Storage Project, a 150 MW solar and 100 MWh storage project in Falls County, Texas.
Hershey worked closely with Edison Energy to understand its options, find the right partners, and finalize agreements for these projects. Hershey is hopeful about the role of renewable energy solutions in reducing its impact on the environment, conserving natural resources, and protecting the farmers and communities we all rely on.
